FERAL TV is a series of commissioned works representing current political and educational struggles through the means of video.

Video activism by and for students was an urgent and practical response to the need of sharing information between students at the different universities (TU/FU/HdK) in Berlin during the student strikes of 1988/1989. The VideoZeitung, or video journal, is one of the projects from which Interflugs emerged, and it established access and knowledge-sharing for the medium of video long befored the institution even considered it.

Five collectives accepted our invitation to produce their own version of a video journal and pick up on the tradition of self-made media and journalism as a tool of empowerment. All groups share in common a resistance against authoritarian control and right-wing forces of governance. The way each group forms and structures their own organisation reflects what they are fighting for. Self-organisation, collective labor, creativity and performative tactics are the accumulated modes of defiance. We proudly present you the contributors to FERAL TV:

In Budapest, the group #FreeSFZE is fighting for the independence of artistic teaching from the cultural nationalist policies of the Orbán government. The University of Theater and Film Arts (SZFE) Budapest has been occupied by students since the democratically elected bodies of the university were stripped of their power by a state-appointed commission in late summer 2020.

The Rojava Film Commune is a collective of filmmakers founded in 2015 and based in the autonomous region of Rojava. The Commune tasks itself with mediating and depicting the daily struggles in the Syrian war and Rojava’s collective attempt to build a new society.The Commune also runs the Rojava Film Academy, which offers one-year courses in Kurdish language and international film history, film theory, and all the stages of film production, taught by local and international film professionals. The structure of the Academy is horizontal, thus allowing the students to co-organize it.

Mon Autre Ecole / Madrassati Nafidati is a school collectively run by artists and educators in Algiers, Algeria. The school runs on a solidarity-based financing model and allows students who drop out of the rigid Algerian school system to complete their education. The school is not only a place of learning, but also a center of artistic and political debate.

Polizeiklasse Dresden is a collective of artists that emerged from the Dresden University of Fine Arts in 2019 on the occasion of the tightening of the Saxon Police Law. In their works they deal with authoritarian state power, fascism and the New Right, mostly in public space, using elements of civil disobedience, installation, theater and performance.

The Anonymous art students Copenhagen group was formed in response to recent events at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. An anonymous group of artists published a video documentation of a performance in November 2020, which points to the intertwining of the trade in enslaved people with the genesis of the art academy. The head of the theory faculty, Dr. Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld, claimed responsibility for the video and immediately lost her job. A criminal investigation is still ongoing and a right-wing backlash overtook the university.

FERAL TV ist eine für diese Ausstellung erstellte Serie von Videos, die aktuelle politische und pädagogische Kämpfe darstellen.

Im Studierendenstreik, der 1988/89 alle Berliner Universitäten erfasst hatte, filmten Studierende mit Videokameras, was ihnen berichtenswert erschien, und sendeten das Material auf Fernsehgeräten, die an allen Berliner Universitäten aufgestellt waren. Später ging die Videozeitung eine Kollaboration mit dem Offenen Kanal Berlin ein und sendete dort im Monatsrhythmus. Die Videozeitung ist eines der Projekte, aus denen Interflugs hervorgegangen ist, und sie hat Zugang und Wissensaustausch über das Medium Video etabliert, lange bevor die Institution daran dachte.

Im Rahmen von Feral Methods sind fünf Kollektive unserer Einladung gefolgt, ihre eigene Version einer Videozeitung zu produzieren und an die Tradition der DIY-Medien als Mittel der Selbstermächtigung anzuknüpfen. Allen Gruppen ist gemeinsam, dass sie mit künstlerischen Mitteln und innerhalb der künstlerischen Lehre gegen autoritäte und rechte Kräfte anarbeiten und dabei die Form der eigenen Organisierung das widerspiegelt, wofür sie kämpfen. Die Rojava Film Commune ist ein 2015 gegründetes Kollektiv von Filmemacher:innen in der autonomen Region Rojava. Die Gruppe hat es sich zum Ziel gemacht, die täglichen Kämpfe im syrischen Krieg und die kollektiven Anstrengungen abzubilden, in Rojava eine demokratische, gleiche und ökologische Gesellschaft aufzubauen. Die Kommune organisiert außerdem die Rojava Film Academy, die jährlich Kurse in kurdischer Sprache, Filmgeschichte, Filmtheorie und -Produktion anbietet. Die Akademie ist horizontal aufgebaut und wird von den Studierenden ko-organisiert.

In Budapest kämpft die Gruppe #FreeSFZE für die Unabhängigkeit der künstlerischen Lehre von der kulturnationalistischen Politik der Regierung Orbán. Die Universität für Theater und Filmkunst (SZFE) Budapest ist von Studierenden besetzt, seitdem im Spätsommer 2020 die demokratisch gewählten Gremien der Hochschule durch eine staatlich eingesetzte Kommission entmachtet wurden.

Mon Autre Ecole / Madrassati Nafidati ist eine seit 2013 von Künstler:innen und Pädagog:innen kollektiv geleitete Schule in Algier, Algerien. Die Schule basiert auf einem solidarischen Finanzierungsmodell und erlaubt es Schüler:innen, die aus dem rigiden algerischen Schulsystem ausscheiden, ihre Ausbildung zu beenden. Die Schule ist nicht nur Lernort, sondern auch ein Zentrum künstlerischer und politischer Auseinandersetzung.

Die Polizeiklasse Dresden ist ein Künstler:innenkollektiv, gegründet 2019 anlässlich der Verschärfung des Sächsischen Polizeigesetzes. Sie setzen sich in ihren Arbeiten mit autoritärer Staatsgewalt, Faschismus und der Neuen Rechten meist im Öffentlichen Raum auseinander und bedienen sich hierfür Elemente des Zivilen Ungehorsams, der Installation, des Theaters und Performance. Hervorgegangen aus der Hochschule für bildende Künste Dresden.

Die Gruppe Anonymous art students Copenhagen gründeten sich in Reaktion auf die jüngsten Vorgänge an der Königlichen Akademie für Bildende Kunst in Kopenhagen. Eine anonyme Künstler:innengruppe veröffentlichte dort im November 2020 die Videodokumentation einer Performance, die die Verflechtung des Handels mit versklavten Menschen mit der Entstehungsgeschichte der Kunsthochschule thematisiert. Die Leiterin der Theoriefakultät, Dr. Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld, erkärte sich verantwortlich für das Video und verlor umgehend ihre Anstellung. Wegen Vandalismus strafrechtlich ermittelt, ein rechter Backlash überrollte die Hochschule.
